what have I done to deserve this?

Let me just start by saying that I am a terrible mother.
Last week in the car, the DOF asked me to put on some “rock” music, as this is apparently the only kind she now likes to listen to. Luckily, there was some Radiohead on my regular Sirius station, so I figured we were all set. We’ve been listening to that since she was an infant. Then she said,” No, Mom. I mean girl rock music!”
Um….what?
It was then that I realized that I have been a negligent parent. While we listen to a HUGE variety of music, made by artists of both genders, but I now realize that bad-ass girl rockers have not gotten their fair share in our personal rotation. And while I began to ponder how this had happened….how I had been so remiss in sharing ALL the good music, it happened. She drove the stake right through my alternative music-loving heart.
She asked me for Miley Cyrus, or some High School Musical.
This is all my fault. We got her a radio/CD player for Christmas. And the radio here is so bad that when we moved here 3 years ago, I used to joke that we had not moved to the Midwest, but instead to 1978, as indicated by the songs in heavy rotation. Needless to say, Top 40 and “oldies” (which are apparently now songs from my childhood) are the only options for regular radio listening.
Subsequently, I have to pull out all the stops….start her on the path to being a lover of all music decent and good. I have a pretty good collection to start her out with, and she has already professed a very stong admiration for Bjork and Shirley Manson from Garbage, but what else?
I’m looking for some help/recommendations/inspiration to drown out the drivel….whatcha got?
Who are some of your favorite “rock” musicians? (They don’t all have to be female, but more of those would be helpful)

uhhh Joan Jett!

Also – I’m kind of totally loving Pink she’s pretty badass…
Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Stevie Nicks, Heart, if you can stand it some good old Pat Benetar. Chrissie Hynde!!!
Joan Jett all the way and she can always join Lincoln in the Bon Jovi fan club. Just bought his tickets for the Foxboro show this summer. Jesus H. – help me!
Rock on Greta
N.K.O.T.B.
Poison
That’s really all I listen to.
Siousie and the Banshees
Sonic Youth
Mazzy Star
The Sundays
Am I dating myself yet? These women fronted bands all are great. And looking back even further you can’t forget about Ella Fitzgerald. I’ve been listening to a lot of Frank, Sammy, Dean and the boys recently and have been listening to a good amount of Ella also.
Great suggestions, everyone! And already so helpful. We spent the weekend checking out some great stuff…..guess who thinks Hole is the cat’s pajamas?
Howdy!
In light of your request for songs from chicks that rock, as well as the fast approaching Women’s Day! (a Russian national holiday for the ages…), I think I’ll try to get my friends together and devise a collection of hardcore girl rock to send your way. CDs and all. Like a mixtape of the future, just not quite, because we’ve already made CDs obsolete-ish, but hey, why not try. And also, the DoF needs to know that she comes from a long line of musical enthusiasts, and a good selection of avid feminists.

Farrin…thx for the props! We do love the Stevie Nicks, but had to keep our list pared down or it would have taken 6 years to listen to. And I love me some Wilson sisters
Chris….YIIISSSS! And thank you in advance for the compilation…we can’t wait to hear it!!!
